Travel Story: Rutherglen Weekend

Travel Story: Rutherglen Weekend

I wrote a story of the wine region of Rutherglen for the Australian travel publication, Holidays for Couples. It is written for the short break, weekend or honeymoon experience with a detailed itinerary of where to go, stay, eat, and - naturally - what to drink.

Rutherglen is one of my favourite wine regions (in the world actually), and one that I visited about a year ago for another travel story for Selector Magazine, an Australian food and wine publication.

Rutherglen is in north east Victoria, right near the NSW border. It's a 3.5 hour drive from Canberra and less from Melbourne, making it a nice short break destination. Despite it's small size (you can drive from one end to the other in 15 minutes), Rutherglen is full of really quality wineries. In fact, it has some of the oldest wineries in Australia, 150 years old, and as such, Rutherglen is known for its ports and muscats; the kind of wine they used to drink 150 years ago.

One of the really interesting things about Rutherglen though, and the reason you should visit now, is that these old, and several new, wineries are experimenting with new world wines with great success. Think Mediterranean, Spanish and Portugese varieties, both as single and blended wines. Mmm, yummy.

Intrigued? You'll just have to visit Rutherglen for yourself, or read my Rutherglen article in Holidays for Couples to make the most of your trip.

Now here's a "taste" of the lovely Rutherglen...
